I-81, South

For two and a half hours
                I stare out the windshield.
The white dashes of the road
repeat their broken line pattern
                blurring together
             breaking              apart
                blurring together
             breaking               apart
                blurring together

My window down
hair whirls around my face
strands stick to my lips.

              Listening
              to old mix tapes
              rewinding Three Ring Binder Circus
              over
                          and over –
dirty clubs and bad demo tapes,
first shows and bands who broke up a lifetime ago,
                       I hear voices of friends
I haven’t spoken to in years.

Ahead the mountains always opening
to the place I was so
                                           determined to escape.

PENNSYLVANIA WELCOMES me.
The sun has set
by the time
I reach the city built
on the remnants of an old
coal mining town.
The lights of malls and restaurants
mix with the glow coming through
house windows.

           Three Ring Binder Circus
again
        and again –
